Projets de Physique Expérimentale - Learning the Scientific Method by doing
The course “Phy Ex” was created by Yves Couder in the Paris VII university to teach experimental physics through research projects. This poster summarizes the concepts behind Phy Ex and its practical organisation. It then goes on to illustrate three particular projects, based on problems of the International Physicists' Tournament and studied in Phy Ex in the years 2019-2023. More information on these examples may be found in the publications by the students, their teachers and collaborators:
(1) The ping-pong ball water cannon. Comptes Rendus, Mécanique, Tribute to an exemplary man: Yves Couder, Vol. 348 (2020) no. 6-7, pp. 423-437 (10.5802/crmeca.46).
(2) The charmed string: self-supporting loops through air drag. Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Volume 877 (2019), pp.R2. ⟨10.1017/jfm.2019.631⟩. ⟨hal-02970530⟩
(3) Magnetic levitation in the field of a rotating dipole, Physical Review E, Volume 110 (2024), pp. 045003 (10.1103/PhysRevE.110.045003). (hal-04941905v1)
